Is Buriram Safe to Visit? Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

The short answer is yes — Buriram city and the vast majority of the province are safe to visit.

But given that Thailand and Cambodia fought an armed border conflict in 2025 that made international headlines, you deserve more than a short answer. Here is what actually happened, what it means for visitors, and what — if anything — you should avoid.

What Happened: The 2025 Thailand-Cambodia Conflict

In May 2025, a skirmish near the ancient Preah Vihear temple left a Cambodian soldier dead. Both sides blamed each other, and what followed was months of escalating tension.

Full-scale fighting broke out in late July 2025. Cambodia fired BM-21 multiple rocket launchers into Thai civilian areas; the Royal Thai Air Force responded with F-16 airstrikes — its first combat operations since 1988. A ceasefire was agreed on 28 July 2025 in Kuala Lumpur. Fighting resumed in December 2025, lasting 20 days, killing at least 101 people and displacing more than half a million people on both sides of the border. A second ceasefire was signed on 27 December 2025.

As of April 2026, the ceasefire is holding. No active fighting is taking place. Tensions remain and the land border between Thailand and Cambodia stays closed, but there is no ongoing conflict.

What Does This Mean for Buriram?

Buriram province shares a short stretch of its southern edge with Cambodia. That border area — specifically districts around Ban Kruat — experienced rocket strikes and civilian evacuations during the worst periods of the conflict.

Around 15,000 residents were evacuated from the border area in December 2025. Those evacuees were directed to emergency shelters at Chang International Circuit in Buriram city — which tells you something important: the city was where people came to for safety, not somewhere they were fleeing.

The affected areas were border villages. Buriram city sits well over 100km from the Cambodian border.

What the UK Government Says

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all but essential travel to areas within 20km of the land border with Cambodia. This covers parts of southern Buriram province but does not include Buriram city, Chang Arena, the Chang International Circuit, or any of the main visitor attractions in the province.

Check the FCDO Thailand travel advice page before you travel — it is updated regularly and is the most reliable single source for British visitors. Travellers from other countries should check their own government’s equivalent: the US State Department and Australian DFAT issue comparable advisories.

All point to the same conclusion: stay away from the immediate border zone.

What Is and Isn’t Affected for Visitors

Safe and open:

Closed or currently restricted:

  • Ta Muen Thom temple — this ancient Khmer site near the Surin/Cambodia border is closed. It was already difficult to access before the conflict and remains so.
  • All land border crossings between Thailand and Cambodia remain suspended.
  • The border zone within 20km of Cambodia should be avoided in line with FCDO advice.

General Safety in Buriram

Setting aside the border situation entirely, Buriram is by Thai standards a very safe place. Violent crime against tourists is extremely rare. The biggest everyday risks are the same as anywhere in Thailand: road traffic (drive or ride carefully, always wear a helmet on a motorbike), heat and hydration, and the occasional stomach upset from street food — none of which should deter you from visiting.

The city is quiet, friendly, and well-used to visitors arriving for football matches and motorsport events. Solo travellers, couples, and families all visit without issue.

The bottom line: Buriram city is safe. The conflict affected border villages, not the places visitors go. The ceasefire is holding. Check official travel advice before you go, avoid the 20km border zone, and visit with confidence.
